Alexandra Stamson

Philosopher

How do we understand each other? What keeps us from fully understanding ourselves? Does failing to understand ourselves or others lead to a failure in our social-political spaces?

These are the central questions of my philosophy, which have led me to pursue academic work in social epistemology, feminism, and political theory. These questions have also driven me towards public philosophy, as the only way that we can collectively work to understand each other better is if we all have access to the same information.

Areas of Expertise

Social Epistemology, Understanding, Theories of Identity, Feminist Philosophy, Queer Theory, Media Theory

My interests are in social epistemology, feminist and queer theory, and digital humanities and media theory. My central philosophical pursuits look at the ways that certain epistemic environments can impact the way that agents develop their self-identities, and the way that political, technological, and social pressures can harm agents in the capacity to know themselves.

Along with my philosophical pursuits, I use my background in media theory and feminist philosophy to work on the analysis of gender and sexuality representation in popular fiction. My past academic aims have been to bring feminist philosophy and media/literary theory together in a way that critiques the impact that fictional narratives have on our social and cultural experience.
